Introduction
Deep tissue massage is an aggressive massage form. It can be a powerful ally in managing your pain. As popular as this treatment has become, there are a few myths. Watch the set of 8 videos to learn more.
Why Aggressive Massage?
I describe my treatment style as “Deep Tissue Massage”. It is more of a description of my aggressive, focused work. This work accesses the deeper tissues, rather than being an actual credential. This is actually one of the myths. There are no actual certifications or credentials to become a therapist who performs Deep Tissue Massage. Hence, it is very important to get references. Ask those who have received treatment from a therapist you are considering visiting.
Because it is an aggressive massage form, it is ideal to do your research on the therapists experience level.
It can provide longer term positive outcomes for people who suffer from chronic pain and tightness.
What are a few myths?
- A therapist requires a certification or a credential to call themselves a “deep tissue therapist” or perform the style. This is untrue. In Ontario a therapist or institution can claim to perform deep tissue massage and describe it as aggressive massage. If you’ve tried many massage therapists, you know it can be inconsistent. This is especially true for those who do deep tissue work.
- All the spas and clinics perform deep tissue massage the “same way”. Massage Therapists over time develop their own style. In school we are given a baseline bundle of techniques. As the therapist become more experienced they will discover the techniques that they feel are more helpful for a particular result. Myself, I really utilize 4-5 techniques that I use over and over again. I use the techniques that I have found to be the most useful for what I do over the years. I{ve basically thrown out or minimize the use of other techniques that I have found to be of little use. I will aim to achieve the best performance from these techniques. I will seek the best angles, pressure, precision and focus. Timing will also play a crucial role in utilizing the technique effectively. It is important to understand that any of these factors can drastically change the outcomes if slightly off. For example, if you are off by just millimeters from a precise location, you can miss an important trigger point. If your pressure is a lot less than needed you will miss the opportunity to release an important trigger point. If you apply too much pressure, the patient can tense up significantly. As a result, the degree of change may be insignificant or non-existent.
- The therapist has to be super strong to aggressive massage, deep tissue work. This also is untrue. A therapist who is very precise can be as effective as a bigger therapist. They understand how to utilize leverage. Having said this, the bigger, stronger therapist may lack the insight to be precise. They can miss out on treating important points. Just using myself as an example. I’ve been a therapist for about 25 years. In my earlier, younger days I relied on brute strength (I was a lot stronger). Now, I am still pretty strong but I rely more on being precise.
