What is the most common reason for lower back pain?
Easily the most common reason for lower back pain is prolonged sitting. Prolonged sitting with bad posture. This typically is observed in office workers. “Sitting is the new smoking”. This is a phrase used in illustrating the negative health effects of prolonged sitting and inactivity.
Sitting can cause muscles of the lower back to become tight. The muscles that bend the thigh to your body (hip flexors) can also become short and tight. This can cause the pain and discomfort.
Progression of symptoms
The earlier that you can get lower back pain relief, the better. This seems very obvious but there is a powerful reason for this.
There is a general progression to be aware of when it comes to lower back pain. This is especially true if you have had the issue for a long time. This can be from weeks to months.
Below is a summary:
- It initially starts off as a slight local discomfort. This usually goes away if it is relatively mild.
- Next phase is that the area become tight . Now, you have to move around to gain comfort or stretch every once in a while.
- The area become increasingly tight and you notice that when you move there are restrictions. This can be rotating, bending, moving from sitting to standing. Stretching and foam rolling give some relief.
- The area become so restricted that when you move a certain direction, the muscles go into a hard spasm. The movements can be innocuos such as twisting to reach for something. The spasm now prevents you from moving in a certain direction and it can impact your daily activities. Generally at this stage, the muscles will feel rock hard.
- At this stage you are now noticing symptoms that travel. It can be radiating pain. Discomfort can be into the hips and glutes to all the way down the thigh and leg to the foot. At this stage there can be some nerve involvement. Although it is possible to notice referral symptoms at any of these stages. The difference is in how quickly this can be alleviated.
- This stage, is where a specialist is needed and/or a quick visit to the ER. This seems extreme but it can happen where the injury is so severe that invasive medical treatment is needed. At this stage, massage is the least of one’s choices for treatment. At this stage I will have to refer a patient out and avoid massage all together.
Can the hip flexors cause lower back pain?
Treatments for lower back pain relief can be targeted to the hip flexors. Specifically the Iliopsoas muscle. This is a bonus muscle of the three muscles mentioned in the video above. This muscle runs from your lower thoracic spine and lower back spinal segments. The muscle attaches to the inside of the Femur (thigh bone).
The function of this muscle is to bring the thigh towards the rib cage. When you are seated, this muscle becomes short and tight. Over time it can become overly tight and short impacting your lumbar (lower back spinal segments). This can cause pain and discomfort in the lower back and upper thigh area.
Lower back pain relief is needed if you are noticing the pain and discomfort is constantly felt. Lower back pain relief with deep tissue massage is an effective tool to decrease symptoms.
